Inter-Hunt Relay, S of E, Ardingly

Well done indeed to our brilliant relay team (Tristan Goodall, Racheal Morley, Lydia Jeffries and Emma Shaw) and Chef d'Equipe Kate Ford.

In a difficult draw, they qualified for the final with flying colours. 'Probably' says Cate Osmaston 'for the first time in 300 years or something' (and she should know). After an exciting time they ended up 4th over all, which is quite an achievement. The cheering throng of spectators urged them on to an inspirational finish. We are very proud of you! Here's to the next one. Go, team Chid and Lec, go!

Puppy Show, 2011

The conditions were absolutely perfect and a huge crowd turned out to see the new entry. The judges, Dominic Jones MFH of the South Dorset and Jeremy Reed MFH (and huntsman) of the Flint and Denbigh, took their roles extremely seriously. After some considerable deliberation, it was time for tea and this season the tea-table positively groaned. In fact, we ran out of room for all the offerings. The whole day was a tremendous success and the kennels never looked better. Well done to everyone behind the scenes for such a marvellous display. And thank you to all of who came on a day when there were other local interest from racing at Goodwood to polo at Cowdray Park. Congratulations to the lone figure who managed all three - and tea.

See results here.

Inter-Hunt Relay, Windsor

Well done to the team (Sarah Cherriman, Tristan Goodall, Paul Lyon-Maris, Rachael Morley with Chef d'Equipe Kate Ford). First into the arena with a tough draw against the South Wold, they acquitted themselves brilliantly. Daunting for Sarah on Ross, who had the distinction of completing the course first out of 80+ riders in 20 teams and beating her opponent soundly on time, points and fences. Doubly daunting for Tristan whose experienced relay mount came up lame that morning. On a last-minute borrowed horse, which had never jumped in the ring, they too beat their opponents as did Paul and Rachael. A terrific display. Although the team were fast, it was sadly not enough to get us through to the last eight....but on to Ardingly they go!

10th May 2011

Hunt Supporters Party, The Kennels

A party to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the funding of the CL&C Hunt Supporters Club was held in the gardens at the kennels. It was a tremendous occasion, with former Chairmen and committee members flying in from all corners. A special badge was struck and a cake baked ( a masterpiece of design by the Hoskins family). After a delicious dinner, it being an HSC 'do', there was, inevitably, a raffle and, customarily, a rousing speech from Chairman Peter Sherratt. And within the marquees no-one noticed the rain as they danced the night away....

Cycle Ride around CL&C Hunt Country

Paddy Walker's annual trip around our country took place on a glorious day. Beginning and ending near Rogate, the 33 riders paused at the kennels. Maria Shiner had made a delicious lunch, while Sage provided some distractions from the journey ahead. This gets bigger and better each year. And quite possibly longer - they travelled some 50 miles. Thank you to Paddy and all who took part.

The Big Spring Clean

When our season opens at Petworth House, their season closes. You might be interested to know that the House features in a new 6-part series on BBC4. Art historian Andrew Graham-Dixon goes behind the scenes to reveal how the valuable collections are cleaned and cared for when the House is shut for the winter.

The Farmers' Dinner, 2011

This year's Farmers' Dinner was an absolute triumph! Our after-dinner speaker, Charles Collingwood (The Archers' Brian Aldridge) will surely be a hard act to follow...Well done to Deborah, Maria and Paul and thank you to all who helped and to all who attended.

Inter-Hunt Team Chase, Heythrop

Congratulations to our valiant Team Chase team - Sarah Cherriman, Nikki Button and John Langdon (sadly, Emma Shaw's horse couldn't make it). They showed the CL&C in the best possible light. Although not placed, they finished and they survived amidst the toughest competition in the UK. A report in this week's Horse & Hound shows you just how impressive their achievement is.

Hounds and the Huntsman

Award-winning film maker Michael Slowe's latest film shows Sage and hounds over the past year at Petworth and is now available to buy. It's a beautiful and informative documentary, a miniature masterpiece with moments of rare beauty. It's stunning and it's a hunt follower's Christmas stocking-filler without equal.
